Exposition « Gurs 1940 »

The Wannsee Conference House in Berlin, Maison d'Izieu and the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region have joined forces to mark the 80th anniversary of "Operation Bürckel" in 2020. Delayed due to the health crisis and inaugurated at the French Embassy in Berlin in April 2021, the exhibition will be visible to the public for the first time in France at Maison d'Izieu from 8 October 2021 to 28 August 2022. OPENING The exhibition will be inaugurated live online on Thursday 7 October at 9.15 am with simultaneous translation into German. A round-table discussion will follow at 2pm on the theme of "Remembrance of the Shoah and Defence of Democracy" in the presence of Serge and Beate Klarsfeld and Michael Blume. PRESENTATION OF THE EXHIBITION On 22 and 23 October 1940, more than 6,500 Jewish men, women and children from Baden, the Palatinate and Saarland in Germany were deported to the Gurs camp in southern France - in one of the first systematic deportations organised by the Nazis. Many of the deportees died in this and other camps in southern France. From the summer of 1942 onwards, those interned at Gurs were deported to extermination camps in Eastern Europe, where they were murdered. Few of them returned. This deportation of German Jews to France, unique in Nazi-occupied Europe, has gone down in history as "Operation Bürckel". 7 families of children welcomed at the Colonie d'Izieu were taken in this round-up.
